We put together a multidisciplinary team to tackle the problems of EDs
EMERGENCY MEDICINE
Barbara Cleaver
Barbara's over 15 years in Emergency Medicine has given her first hand experience of the challenges which face ED nurses and managers. Her detailed insights into current problems and the new directions in Emergency Medicine practice, underpin the development of SortED's mix of new ideas and strategies to respond to these challenges. Barbara is Clinical Lead for the Partnership.
INVENTORS & ENTREPRENEURS
Mark Leaning & Gillie Francis
Mark and Gillie are both serial inventors with a strong track record of innovation in all the areas they have tackled. Both are also entrepreneurs and IPO veterans, having founded several companies between them. Sort-ED Partnership LLP is an extension of their joint interest in healthcare technologies.
MEDICAL & CLINICAL RESEARCH
Gillie Francis & Barbara Cleaver
The ability to assess the evidence from claims in the medical and triage literature is essential for our evidence-based medicine approach. Gillie has spent her whole career in medical research and is therefore well versed in the evaluation of evidence, dissecting that from simple opinion. Barbara has experience in evaluating clinical guidelines relating to ED practices.
SYSTEMS ANALYSIS & MODELLING
Mark Leaning
Mark has extensive experience in analysing systems, both physiological and operational systems in healthcare. He also uses mathematical modelling to better understand systems and predict how system modifications will impact performance. He and Gillie first collaborated on a model of random events in stem cell differentiation. Now his models of ED processes allow prediction of departmental 'meltdown'.
PROGRAMMING
Gillie Francis & Mark Leaning
Gillie has been responsible for programming and app design of the prototype stage of SortED Tablet. Her background in programming stems from projects at London University. She has also programmed the analytical tools within SortED Tablet which allow data-driven software refinement. Mark has been programming the algorithms of SortED Control Panel and its predictive system.
IT & PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Paul Luper
Paul has responsibility for all IT matters required to support the clinical trials. His expertise in testing large-scale systems is also invaluable in setting up the necessary infrastructure we will need for integrating SortED into hospital systems. Paul acted as project manager for our recent contract under the SBRI scheme. This contract funded our first observational clinical trial of SortED tablet.
DATA ANALYSIS
Gillie Francis, Lucy Boyde & Jacqui Garland
SortED Tablet gathers and evaluates data obtained at initial assessment to benefit patients; and time differences between SortED and control nurses give key proof of concept. In addition, at this stage the data and special analytical tools also allow us to study the interaction between the software and the nurse. They even tell us how much training we need - the answer is very little. Gillie is assisted by Lucy and Jacqui with the data deluge.
ED NURSES
ED & HOSPITAL MANAGERS
We are extremely grateful to the band of Charing Cross and St Mary's Hospital nurses who have helped with our clinical trials on SortED Tablet. We also had early input from nurses at Musgrove Park hospital in Somerset during bench tests. Mark has had useful contributions from ED nurses, plus ED and hospital managers during his development work for SortED Control Panel.
