Collaboration with Dr Arian Zaboli – May 2024

We are delighted to announce that Sort-ED Partnership has entered a collaboration agreement with Dr Arian Zaboli – Coordinator of non-medical research at IRTS – Innovation, Research and Teaching Service – a division of The South Tyrol Health Authority. IRTS deals with the research of 7 hospitals in Northern Italy.

Arian and his colleagues at Merano Hospital have used a series of incisive observational studies to achieve key insights into Emergency Medicine practices. In contrast to the NHS’s multiple administrative hurdles for researchers, Italy has a regional structure for ethical permission which has simplified and streamlined its authorisation process for prospective observational studies. We are now embarking on joint testing of SortED’s prototype nurse assistant for initial patient evaluation and both the old and new systems at Merano Hospital.

Arian’s papers on triage errors and insights into how classic triage systems both under-triage some seriously ill patients, but also over-triage many patients who could safely be given the lowest acuity score. This has been an important contribution to the field. Throughout these studies the team has amassed a large data set which SortED is currently exploring for further insights into what works well and some drawbacks of legacy triage systems. Such insights are useful for making new decision support software immune to the problems of past systems.
